As all Indonesian food Acehnese food is also very spicy and full of unexpected tastes. If you cannot handle spicy food always ask for 'tidak pedas' (engl. not spicy).

You cannot cook here without putting spicy chili peppers in Aceh. The more spicy the better taste... for locals...

In some restaurants you can find special meniu where spiciness of a dish is marked from 1 to 10 (most spicy). Some locals say they can handle just up to 2-3.
